Strengthen to Dance Stronger and Safer!

Welcome to Week 2 of our Injury Prevention Series! This week, we’re diving into the importance of strengthening exercises to keep your body stable, powerful, and ready for the demands of Irish dance.

Why Strengthening Matters: Irish dance requires precision, balance, and explosive power especially in the feet and ankles. Strengthening the muscles that support these areas reduces the risk of injury and helps improve your performance. Strong, stable feet and ankles can mean safer landings, quicker footwork, and a solid foundation for every movement.

Essential Strengthening Exercises for Dancers: Here are three simple yet effective exercises to add to your routine:

  1. Single-Leg Calf Raises

    • Stand on one leg, keeping your balance and proper dance posture. Slowly rise onto the ball of your foot, then lower back down. Remember move slow and force your body to overcome those wibbles and wobbles.

    • Do 2–3 sets of 10–15 reps per leg.

  2. Ankle Band Resistance

    • Using a resistance band, anchor one end and loop the other around your foot. Move your foot in all directions—up, down, inward, and outward.

    • Do 2 sets of 10 reps for each movement.

  3. Balance Holds

    • Stand on one foot, keeping your core engaged and proper dance posture. Try holding for 30 seconds in a dance position maybe a front kick or butt kick, then switch sides. Add a challenge by closing your eyes or standing on a soft surface.

    • Repeat 2–3 times per leg.

Your Challenge for the Week: Incorporate these exercises into your routine 2–3 times this week. Take note of how your balance, strength, and confidence improve with each session.

Stay tuned next week as we explore the critical role of rest and recovery in preventing injuries. Until then, keep building that strength and dancing strong!
